The Tatras are the most compact mountains of alpine type in Europe, situated on the border of Poland and Slovakia. They are the highes selection of the Carpatian Mountains, cover some 430 square miles, with the highest peak Gerlach, at 8700 feet. With its beautiful untouched nature, the Tatra Mountains are one of the most beautiful regions in central Europe. In this region wildlife is very rich. Deer, wild boar, lynx, wolves and bears are to be found, as well as a great variety of birds and the Apollo butterfly. There are several caves to explore. Tatra National Park was added to the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve list in 1993.
