Drive to the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor center 3 miles from the airport in Juneau Alaska. Take a short vist at the center to see the ice from one of the best views. Ice cleats are a must as walking on the bare lake ice can be a hazard. A 30 minute walk across the ice to the glacier face area gives fantastic views. Make sure the ice is safe to walk on befor you depart. A quick visit with the locals and watch to see if others are ice skating or sking is a good idication. Stay clear of any open water.
Good outdoor winter equipment is a must as the weather can change quickly. Ice grippers for your foot wear prevent accidents.
The winter is a wonderful time to visit Alaska. The ice and spectacular landscapes are a photo subject every minute. The air tends to be crystal clear leading to deepest blues and contrast. After walking across the ice of Mendenhall Lake to a side sandbar I took this photo as the sun was lowering. It had rained for a week on the Glacier and removed all the snow covering. The glacier ice lit up in a rare blue in contrast with the red colored boulder in the forground. I knew it was a keeper when the shutter clicked.
