Taken in Nirayama, Japan with Mt. Fuji looming in the background. Japan has recently gone through an environmental revolution after realizing that their quick rise to being an industrial power was not only destroying their historic culture but also their ecosystem. Now at the forefront of environmental issues such as global warming and recycling, Japan fights to merge the new with the old and the rice paddy is the personification of this effort. Speckled in between apartment buildings, nestled next to the mountains and only minutes away from a bustling city, the rice paddy is cared for largely the same way as it was hundreds of years ago. Sure the machinery is different but the care for each grain of rice remains. As the baby rice sprouts from a pool of water, a sun sets behind the eternal watch of Mt. Fuji and new technology is used to bring forth a greener world.
