While summer is a popular time to visit Iceland, winters are relatively mild and the crowds are gone. Snow on the ground provides interest and contrast to this familiar scenic location. If you don't take one of the tour buses there you will most likely need to rent a 4WD vehicle. Be sure to bring rain gear for yourself and equipment. There are two main paths, one that goes down to the top of the falls and another which follows the upper rim and gives wider views. Wear good waterproof boots and step carefully! The icy trails can be treacherous.
