The colourful bird, Coppersmith Barbet, seen pecking at a tree in Turbhe on Tuesday. This bird was chosen at last year's Mumbai BirdRace as the `Bird of Mumbai'. It is a fairly common bird with its call familiar to All India Radio `pips'. The bird keeps to fruit trees, feeding on Ficus berries, and commonly nests in the decaying branches of softwooded trees such as Gulmohurs and Copper-pods, amongst other trees, between November and April. This barbet has several forest-dwelling relations across India, and the larger, Brown-headed Barbet occurs in the forests of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. in India
