Brief Directions

Gold Hill is a small town on the Rogue River fifteen miles north of Medford. Take exit off of Interstate five and follow the signs to Crater Lake on Highway 234. Just 1/2 mile out of Gold Hill on Hwy 234 turn right into the sports park. Park at the tennis courts. Take the paved walking path up river. Just as you get on the path near the restrooms is a swampy area on the left. Reeds and grasses poke up through the shallow water where I captured the image.

Notes

I needed a longer lens than the 24-120 to get the image I wanted, but I had to make due. Stepping into the water would have broken the ice. This image is cropped considerably, but I am satisfied with the quality as a small image.

Description

Freezing temperatures froze the shallow water around protruding reeds, creating a beveled look to the ice. Sun reflecting off of surrounding bare trees caught the bevel and reflected gold. At first I walked past the area as it is swampy and messy, not conducive to clean lines and dynamic composition. On my return walk the sun was at just the right angle to reflect gold of of the ice bevels. Once I saw the patterns, I couldn't stop shooting.
