Description

NEW YEARS EVE I DECIDED TO GO TO BED EARLY AND START THE NEW YEAR TRYING MY LUCK AT SHOOTING THE STARS EARLY. I WENT TO A LAKE IN RKY MT NATIONAL PARK THAT I KNEW VERY WELL. I SET UP AND SHOT A FEW TEST SHOTS. ISO 3200, 30 SECONDS WAS JUST AT THE BORDER OF SEEING STAR MOVEMENT. I SHOT A FEW IMAGES AND KNEW THERE WERE LITTLE BENCHES AROUND THIS SIDE OF THE LAKE SO I TURNED MY HEADLAMP ON AND FOUND THIS ONE. I HAD JUST MOVED BEHIND THIS BENCH AND PUT HALLET PEAK TO THE WEST IN THE BACKGROUND. I SET UP IN PORTRAIT ORIENTATION AND RELEASED THE SHUTTER. I WAS LOOKING UP AND ALL OF A SUDDEN I SAW THIS HUGE FLASH AND THE OBJECT BREAKING UP. ONE, TWO, THREE EXPLOSIONS WITH PARTS COMING OFF AND SLOWING DOWN AS IT CONTINUED AND GOT WHITER AND WHITER UNTIL IT WENT OVER THE HORIZON. I LOOKED DOWN AND SURE ENOUGH THE SHUTTER WAS STILL OPEN. I WONDERED IF THAT HAD CROSSED MY COMPOSITION AND WHEN THE SHUTTER CLOSED THIS IS WHAT I SAW. I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT. INSTANTLY A MILLION THINGS RAN THROUGH MY MIND. WHAT WAS IT? WHERE DID IT GO? I FELT SMALL AND REALIZED WHAT A SMALL PART OF A BIGGER THING WE ARE. WHAT A WAY TO START MY NEW YEARS DAY. I WAS ALONE BUT I BET YOU COULD SEE MY SMILE ACROSS THE LAKE.
