Travel east out of Vernal on US 40 thru Naples and follow the sigh marked "Book Cliffs Access". Continue south, crossing the Green River after 7 miles; from this point continue on for another 12 miles until you see a sign on the left side of the road for FANTASY CANYON. Follow the small signs along this dirt road until you arrive at the Fantasy Canyon parking area. Caution: Do not attempt this clay road during or after a rain since even a four wheel drive vehicle will slide right off the road's edge.
Fantasy Canyon is about as unique an area as can be found in the southwest; it is however, located right in the middle of one of northern Utah'snatural gas fields and the approach road is hardly pretty or interesting. In fact, desolate would be the word to best describe the surrounding area. However, this ten acre "canyon" is filled with wonderful formations which will appeal to any photographer. The rocks, while whimsical in their formations, do lack much color, and therefore it is rather essential to photograph them either very early or very late in the day. The resulting colors imparted by a sunrise or sunset go a long way in coming away with dramatic photos here. Black and white also work very well here, but again, early and late light add much needed soft contrast to this rather colorless area. Note: The "Teapot" formation, as shown in this photo no longer exhists- just a few weeks after this photo was taken in August 2006, it was destroyed by either heavy rains and wind or by vandals; no one knows for sure...a true loss.
