Description

Dungeness Spit is 5 and 1/2 miles long jutting into the Strait of Jaun de Fuca. It is the longest naturual spit in the world. On the south of the strait is the Olympic Peninsula and the north is the provence of British Columbia with the capital city, Victoria BC many times visible from the Washington side. The Dungeness Lighthouse has been in continuous use since 1857 one of the first lighthouses built on the west coast. Mt Baker in the background is the seoond tallest mountain in the Cascade range with the 2nd most glaciers next to Mt Rainier. The Straight of Juan de Fuca is the commercial and passenger ship entrance to the Pugent Sound which accesses the Port of Olympia [the southern end of the sound], the Port of Tacoma and the Port of Seattle.
