Sandhill Crane In Flight
- Title: Sandhill Crane In Flight
- State/Province/Region: New Mexico
- Country: United States
- Description: I have to admit – I have a love / hate relationship with photographing sandhill cranes in flight. On one hand, I love getting cool on-the-wing photos like the one above, but on the other hand – WOW – a single morning of good shooting can produce 700+ photos to sort through!
This particular image was captured one amazingly brisk morning in Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge - truly an incredible place. Located in central(ish) New Mexico, it’s an outstanding sanctuary for dozens – if not hundreds – of different birds and mammals. Sandhills love to stop by and winter here, so I thought it would only be polite to drop by and say hello since I was (sort of) in the area.
Most of the Sandhills were content skimming along the pond and slowly gaining altitude - away from the camera. This guy, however, was one of the few determined birds to get up and outta there as fast as possible. Worked out great for me – it allowed a background showcasing some of the rugged mountains that surround the area.
