  • Description: Large, bright yellow eyes fixed and head cocked, this Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) stands motionless but poised to strike at fish hiding at the base of the marsh plants on a channel between two lakes. The white stripe on the top of its head indicate that this is an adult Great Blue Heron (juveniles have a solid blue crest). They can stand statue-like and move very slowly while stalking prey but have lightning speed when striking.
