Interlude Near Knapsack Pass, Mount Rainier

  • Title: Interlude Near Knapsack Pass, Mount Rainier
  • State/Province/Region: Washington
  • Country: United States
  • Description: I photograph at Rainier a lot. It's one of my favorite destinations in the northwest. Access is relatively easy, its an incredibly diverse landscape, and of course, the power of Mount Rainier is undeniable. I love showing "Mother Mountain" in the context of its surrounds. Rainier is unique among many of the Cascade volcanoes in that it's surrounded my small mountain ranges. These ranges constitute wilderness by their own rights, and are as beautiful and rugged as anything the northwest has to offer, but Rainier still stands over them all as an impressive and beautiful presence on the near horizon. This image, I feel, shows Rainier in this context. Knapsack Pass, where I took the photo, is accessed via a steep hike up from Mowich Lake in the NW corner of the park. The pass provides easy scrambles to a handful of peaks and affords wonderful views of Rainier.
