God Light Over Teton Range

  • Title: God Light Over Teton Range
  • State/Province/Region: Wyoming
  • Country: United States
  • Nearest Area: Jackson Hole
  • Nearest Town: Moose
  • Best Season: Autumn
  • Description: A wildfire had been burning just south of the town of Jackson for three weeks prior to my trip to Grand Teton National Park. Luckily the local fire departments had the blaze fully contained just before I arrived but smoke was still lingering in the air as I drove through the park on my first evening in town. As sun got lower in the sky the smoke in the air was helping to produce some really great light and I started to look for a place to capture the scene. The sun sets behind the Teton range making a sunset exposure with much detail in the mountains difficult under the best conditions, the smoke in the air made it even more difficult. Because of the lack of detail in the range I decided to silhouette the mountains somewhat and make life a bit easier. I composed the image featuring the sun right and within the frame so I'd be sure to include the streaks of light shooting over the crest in the image. I set my aperture to f/22 so I'd get as much of a star effect as possible with the sun being as bright as it was and made a number of images over the course of about 30 or 40 minutes.
