- Description: This spot west of the Yosemite Valley is a favorite with photographers, and for good reason. Highway 120 rises up and away from the valley, hugging the side of the Merced River Canyon. At this spot, there's an impressive waterfall on one side of the road that drops steeply down the canyon wall. On the other side--where this shot was taken--the source of that waterfall, Cascade Creek, collides with Tamarack Creek, creating some of the most dramatic water scenery one is likely to find anywhere. It's been famously shot by well-known landscape photographers, so I tried to find a take on this spot that's somewhat different. I loved the push-pull appearance of these two small trees that seem to be holding on to the granite boulders for dear life. Isolating those two trees with the water crashing around them creates an image that I think captures nicely the chaos of that confluence.
