Ocean Entry 1

  • Title: Ocean Entry 1
  • State/Province/Region: Hawaii
  • Country: United States
  • Nearest Area: Puna
  • Nearest Town: Kalapana
  • Best Season: Spring
  • Description: ISO 3200, f3.2 @1/125th sec. Shot in the pre dawn hours from a boat off the coast of Hawaii, a couple of miles south of Volcanoes National Park. I had thoroughly researched this trip ahead of time so I knew going in that it would be tough to get useable images in low light from a boat. In addition to the motion caused by the 3-4 foot swells the captain had to keep the boat moving forward at all times in order to maintain safe control. The photographer in me wished he would slow down but considering how close we were to the rocky shore and steaming lava the survivalist in me was glad he kept the boat moving. I started out at ISO 2000 to try and keep noise to a minimum but my shutter speeds were low, between 1/25th to 1/60th of a second. I was using a lens that did not have image stabilization built in so I had to bump the ISO up to 3200, which I consider the max on my D300s. Depending on composition the bump up allowed me to get in the range of 1/60th to 1/160th of a second. This was less than ideal in these conditions but we were close enough that most shots were in a medium focal length range, between 45-65mm, which minimized motion blur to some degree. I didn’t get the sharp action stopping shots I was looking for but all in all it was a great experience, one that is not to be missed if you are on the “Big Island” while lava is entering the ocean.
