Breach Sequence

  • Title: Breach Sequence
  • State/Province/Region: Alaska
  • Country: United States
  • Nearest Town: Hoonah
  • Best Season: Summer
  • Description: Not he greatest quality but here goes. Shot from a small boat in Icy Strait Alaska. It was cold and raining and I was having a hard time keeping the lens dry and my hands steady. The captain had told us that the whales here do not breach here as often as they do when they are in Hawaii. He surmised that this is because while in Alaska they are feeding and in Hawaii they are mating. This is a composite of three images of the same whale done in PS Elements 8. My Photoshop skills are next to non-existent and this was my first attempt at a composite image. I wanted to show the sequence of the “half breach”. A quick note to others who want to photograph breaching whales, DO NOT “CHIMP”! Shortly after this sequence I was “chimping”, looking at my LCD to see what I captured, when another whale did a full breach within 75 yards of the boat. All I saw, and heard, was the splash. The captain was so excited he was jumping around and screaming that it was the most spectacular breach he had ever seen, and he has been taking out whale watchers for a decade! I was sick to my stomach when I had to tell him I had missed the shot!
