  • Description: Of all the views in California’s Eastern Sierra Nevada, this scene may be my favorite. A lake sitting beneath part of a mountain range is a description that can be used for so many views; however there is something about this particular remote location that has drawn me to it, ever since I moved to California. To reach this area, I began my hike from the Onion Valley Trailhead, located west of Independence. This view is about seven miles from the trailhead, which leads hikers up to 11,700-foot Kearsarge Pass. Once I arrived at Bullfrog Lake, there was just time to setup camp before choosing the exact location to photograph this view from, during the following sunrise. I got up about 30-minutes before sunrise, to give me enough time to set up. I waited for the sun to rise behind me just high enough to paint only the tops of the surrounding peaks, before I began to shoot. The final image is a blend of two unfiltered exposures, in an attempt to reproduce this timeless Sierra view as close to the way I was so fortunate to witness it.
