Dance Of Passion

  • Description: In this spectacular rite of spring, sandhill cranes perform a lively and elegant courtship dance. To get the shot, I needed a low vantage point in order to render the birds as silhouettes against the sky and distant mountains. This was achieved by lying in a ditch with the camera lens at ground level. We photographers tend to shoot in Al Servo (Canon) or Continuous Servo (Nikon) as our default wildlife autofocus setting. In this situation though, these settings would have made the shot difficult or impossible to obtain. The grass that surrounded the birds would constantly confuse the autofocus. The solution here was to shoot in One Shot mode (Single Servo mode for Nikon users). By autofocusing on the birds on the ground until the camera hit the right target, holding the shutter button halfway down and recomposing upward, I was able to simply wait for the birds to jump into the sky and fire away.
