Sage Grouse Strut

  • Title: Sage Grouse Strut
  • State/Province/Region: Wyoming
  • Country: United States
  • Brief Directions: Due to the sensitive nature of the species, and the relative ease by which to get to this particular lek, I choose not to divulge it's location to help protect them from harrassment. Even though during the rut the males show extreme tolerance, the hens don't.
  • Best Season: Spring
  • Description: The Greater Sage Grouse exists through many western states. It's a subject of great controversy, since it's recent status as "Warranted but Precluded" under the Endangered Species Act. It's habitat is shared by many forms of energy development, such as gas, coal, and wind. During the first couple of weeks of April, the males go into their full dance, strutting their feathers, and "whooping" through air sacs to attract hens. Dawn is by far the best light.
  • Gear: Nikon D300, Nikkor 70-200 E-FS G f/2.8 w/2x teleconverter
