A tripod is only as good as the head that’s on it. Just about any sturdy head will do, but ballheads have taken over the world of landscape shooters because of the combination of ease of use and steadiness. A solid ballhead should have the load capacity to easily handle your heaviest setup, and it should be easy to adjust and to lock down. The great thing about a ballhead is that it’s infinitely adjustable by unlocking a single knob, and when you’re composing in the field, that’s the kind of functionality you want at your disposal.
