Olympus E-5

The long-awaited refresh of Olympus’ pro DSLR combines excellent image quality, ruggedness and lots of features

This Article Features Photo Zoom

HD Video
While Olympus was the first to put Live View in a DSLR, the E-5 is the first Olympus DSLR to offer video. It can do 1280x720p HD and 640x480p SD video, both at 30 fps. Sound is mono via a built-in microphone or stereo via an optional external stereo mic. Video is recorded in AVI format with Motion JPEG compression, and clips can run up to 2 GB (limited by the AVI format). That works out to about 7 minutes of HD or 14 minutes of SD video.
Rugged Pro Body
The E-5’s lightweight “thixomold” magnesium-alloy body is splash- and dustproof (as are the pro Zuiko lenses). The shutter is tested to 150,000 cycles, and the eye-level SLR viewfinder shows 100% of the actual image area (as does the Live View LCD monitor).
3.0-Inch, Swiveling Live
View LCD

The E-1 and E-3 had smallish LCD monitors. The E-5 has a state-of-the-art, 3.0-inch, 920,000-dot LCD monitor that tilts and swivels for easy video and odd-angle still shooting.
Dual Media
Dual card slots allow the E-5 to record still and video files on CompactFlash (including UDMA) or SD/SDHC/SDXC media.
Multiple Exposure Function
With the E-5, you can combine up to four shots in-camera, in real-time or after shooting all the images using the LCD monitor to position the images.
