Ice Eye

Ice Eye

I am about to head out on my yearly winter trip to the Allegheny Mountains of eastern West Virginia. This area boosts some of the best locations for shooting waterfalls, scenic mountain tops and hardwood forests in the Mid Atlantic states. One of my favorite subjects to shoot at this time of the year, and especially along the thousands of miles of streams and rivers in the Allegheny Mountains, are ice formations. With tempatures expected in the mid twenties during the day and dipping down into the low teens at night finding great ice should be no problem.

The image above was made several years ago along the banks of the South Fork of the Potomac River in a deep hollow between two mountain ridges. I found the ice sheets early in the morning under blue bird clear skies. This lighting scenario is by far my favorite for shooting ice. When shooting in deep shade on a clear day, the color shifts towards the blue spectrum. By keeping your white balance set on daylight, you can pick up the cool tones in the image. I find a silvery blue tone to a great touch to ice images and allows the viewer to feel the cold conditions that much more.

If you have some favorite ice images of your own, I would love to see them. Please leave a link in the comment box below.

Ice patterns are very interesting subjects. many members of the baltimore Camera Club have been making some fabulous images from treks along the Susquehanna River in Harford County Maryland. So where ever you find and body of water that has a rise and fall you can get some great ice patterns.

Thanks for the white balance tip when shooting these objects.

Joe, nice ice! I’m delving into macro and abstract myself these days. Putting the finishing touches on my studio here at home. Looking forward to the WV trip with you. Good shooting to you, Joe

    HiYa Joseph Rossbach,

Your “Ice Eye” is quite lovely. Also your “Geometry” is Class I (Defined as: The only thing wrong with it is that I didn’t do it). You might want to check out my first showcase on ThePhotoArgus: “Ice is Nice.”

Take Care & Stay Aware, Warren

Still surprised about your photo – looked several tiems ago, and it is still hard to believe that is only ice. What kind of magnification was that? (if not post processed to give that amazing look).
