Assignments: March 2011
Photo Assignments From The Editor Of Outdoor Photographer Magazine
The Assignments galleries on the Outdoor Photographer website have been a hit with readers, and as I look through the images, I’m constantly impressed by the wealth of strong photographs. With so much great work, I decided to start looking for special standout images to run in print in each issue. Moving forward, this section of the magazine will become a regular department where I’ll display some of the best from the galleries.
If you aren’t familiar with Assignments, go to www.outdoorphotographer.com/gallery/assignments.html where you can see all of the details about the weekly Assignment and how to submit your photos. It’s a special area on the site where you can engage with fellow OP readers and make comments back and forth. Every week, I come up with a new Assignment. Each one runs for two weeks so there are always two different Assignments galleries that you can submit to. I welcome your suggestions for new Assignments. Please email me with your ideas.

Photographer: Erik Harrison
Location: Court House Towers, Arches National Park, Utah
Equipment: Canon EOS 7D, Canon EF-S
10-22mm ƒ/3.5-4.5 USM, Manfrotto tripod and ballhead, cable release
I had these flowers scouted out for a few weeks, waiting for them to bloom. I had been driving down from Salt Lake City every weekend for the month prior as I was excited about shooting the wildflowers in the desert surrounding Moab. The morning I took the shot, I was fortunate to have the area to myself before dawn. I would have loved a tilt-shift lens for the depth of field I was looking for, but had to settle for making a few exposures with different focal points as the sun cleared the horizon and hit the top of the tower. The image-stacking process let me achieve the best resolution my lens/camera was capable of with unlimited depth of field.
Photographer: Michael Warwick
Location: Yosemite National Park, California
Equipment: Nikon D90, Sigma 120-400mm ƒ/4.5-5.6 DG APO OS HSM
Taken in Yosemite National Park after the first snowfall in November, the clouds and lighting were changing by the minute. The play of light and clouds within the trees at the mountain peaks was dramatic and almost mystical.
