Photo Details

  • Title: Winter's Warmth
  • State/Province/Region: Oregon
  • Country: United States
  • Nearest Area: Sister's Wilderness
  • Nearest Town: Bend
  • Description: This image was captured the morning after the first major winter storm dumped feet of fresh powder in the central Cascades. Here the summits of South and Middle Sister, as well as Broken Top, explode with warm glow, while the coolness of the shadows reveal the extreme sub-zero temperature.
  • Brief Directions: Follow signs to Mount Bachelor, park at Dutchman Flats to access Tumalo mountain from the south-west.
  • Notes: I have returned again and again to the summit of Tumalo mountain during the winter, and each time, this view has something different to offer. This morning, in particular, stands as my favorite, however, as the intense glow gave such warmth to the mountains, yet my thermometer read 10 below zero. Canon 40D, 2 stop soft GND, f11 for 0.25s
  • Best Season: Winter
  • Gear: Tripod, GND Filters, Snowshoes
