Photo Details

  • Title: Alatna Headwaters
  • State/Province/Region: Alaska
  • Country: United States
  • Nearest Area: Brooks Range
  • Nearest Town: Bettles
  • Description: Evening light falls on the Brooks Range mountains behind the headwaters for the Alatna River in Gates of the Arctic National Park & Preserve.
  • Brief Directions: From Anchorage, drive north on the Parks Highway to Fairbanks, a day drive. Then, take the Steese Highway north to the Dalton Highway, also known as the Haul Road, to the town of Coldfoot, also a day's drive. From there, charter a flight to Bettles, where you can choose from several charter operators to take a plane into the park. The other option is to fly into Fairbanks, then catch a special charter bus up the Dalton Highway to Coldfoot.
  • Notes: Gates of the Arctic NP&P is the only unit in the park system that is entirely designated wilderness. There are no public facilities, no roads, and no motorized vehicles permitted except for aircraft. Photographers who choose this as a destination must be experienced backcountry travelers. But, the reward is great, as so few go there to photograph.
  • Best Season: Autumn
  • Gear: Nikon F100, Nikon 20mm f/2.8 lens, Velvia film, Gitzo tripod, Lee GND filters
