Indian Cotton

  • Title: Indian Cotton
  • State/Province/Region:
  • Country: India
  • Description: December 2008, Aurangabad, India. On my way to the Ellora Caves. It is common to see cotton balls all over this route, so many times this scene repeats itself. Cotton is planted in India for over three thousand years, and is mentioned in the "Rigveda", the sacred Hindu text written in 1500 BC. A thousand years later, the Greek historian Herodotus wrote about Indian cotton: "There are trees which grow wild, of which the fruit is a better and more beautiful wool than that of a sheep. The Indians make their clothes from the wool of this tree." Still this ancient description remains true.
