1. Wow! THIS IS UTTERLY FANTASTIC. I AM IN AWE OF THIS TALENT!
2. Looking at this picture is like bathing in nature's riches. Breathtaking.
3. Thanks to all for voting, and for your kind comments! - Jack
4. This is visually stunning. The artist captures the richness of the autumn colors contrasting so beautifully with the gradations of black and white in the waterfall. The movement of the water, the depth of colors, it transports me to that peaceful and restorative corner of nature. Gorgeous.
5. Jack which filter did you use to bring out the gold colors in you rocks?
6. Thanks, RJ - I appreciate your kind words! Mike - I used a circular polarizer to cut glare & let the colors come through. This was shot at sunset, so the light was soft & warm - just about perfect for the shot. Thanks, guys! - Jack
7. I can't say it any better than RJ did. It's a great picture, Jack!
8. Thanks, Tommy! - Jack
9. Hi Jack. I love your picture. Great lighting and the water swirls are awesome. Although I'm not a professional photographer, I know what I like...and this is one I would buy in a minute at an art show. You rock! Kate Stormer 14 South Artists
10. Thanks, Kate! - Jack
11. You have captured Pewit's Nest mystical quality completely with this photo. Beautiful
12. Thanks, Beadwoman! The Baraboo Hills are a really beautiful part of the state, and Pewit's Nest is a gem set in the hills. - Jack
13. “circular polarizer” Looks to me like you used the NIK reflective gold filter, the image looks beautiful but we should all be honest about how the pictures are created.
14. Hi, Steve - While I love the Nik plugins, I didn't use any of them on this image - just the usual postprocessing: white balance, contrast, saturation, levels, curves, sharpening... Sometimes nature is just beautiful enough on her own! :^D Thanks for looking, and glad you like the image! - Jack
15. Like I have said before: This is the problem you have when you get into posting comments, you can pretty much say whatever you want and it must be true because you said it. I for one like the image and have had taken similar images myself only I had to use the reflective gold filter to get the color I wanted.
16. Hi, Egg - Glad you like the image! Nothing wrong with using filters (not sure if you mean on the lens or in post, but either way) if we're making art & not photojournalism - the key is to make an image that draws a response from the viewer! I was just lucky enough to have good light in a deep ravine surrounded by autumn color, so all I needed for this image was the polarizer... - Jack
17. About Steve's comment - he obviously is no relation and doesn't know what a man of integrity you are. Your art is a reflection of your great eye and appreciation for the beauty around us as much (or more) than your technical wizardry. I am so glad you are able to capture and share the amazing colors of Wisconsin! It really does take me home.
18. Thanks for your kind words - I really appreciate it, and I'm glad you enjoy my images! As for Steve - no harm, no foul. He doesn't know me, and it wasn't anything personal. I've learned that if I'm going to put my art out there, I have to be ready for whatever feedback I get. - Jack
19. Beautiful autumn shot..lovely
20. Thanks, hvargas!
21. Don’t get me wrong I like your interpretation very much. Here is a link to a fall shot from the same spot, not so gold.
22. Just click on my name to follow the link to see the difference in the two fall shots. I think more than just a polarizer was used.
23. Just click on my name to follow the link to see the difference in the two fall shots. I think more than just a polarizer was used. Here is another one
24. Hey, Steve - I like Brook's shot! ;^D Too funny - I've learned over the years that there's almost no place you can go where you won't be setting up in somebody else's tripod holes... :^D As for the difference in color - I really didn't use any postprocessing other than what I laid out below, nor did I use a blue&gold polarizer - this was just a SinghRay Vari-N-Duo. That is a warming polarizer, but not to the extent that it turns green to gold! I think the difference is just down to the fact that there was a lot more yellow in the trees when I shot (judging by the green reflection in Brook's), and I shot right at sundown, when the light was sweet & warm. That warm yellow reflection helped light the rocks as well. (cont'd next post)
25. Not sure what to say beyond that - I know where you're coming from, and if I'd done something else I wouldn't have any problem saying so. I try to create an artistic interpretation rather than a photojournalistic record, but in this case the two were pretty close to the same thing. Thanks for taking the time to look & comment! Oh, and thanks for the link to Brook's work - I hadn't run into her work before, and I'm always on the lookout for other artists from the region! - Jack
26. Steve - Just for grins, here's a link to another shot of mine from a bit earlier the same day... http://www.jackjohnsonphoto.com/gallery/latest-work/attachment/autumnal-reflections-9354-3/ - Jack
27. Steve - From your comment about Nik filters, I'm guessing you're a photographer, too - is that right? Do you have work on the web? I wouldn't mind continuing our conversation via email, if you like - as you can probably tell, I love discussing photography, postprocessing, etc... - Jack
28. Simply put . . . an absolutely stunning photograph. Just beautiful! You should be extremely proud of your work.
29. Thanks, photoimp! - Jack
30. Sorry Jack Steve is right the gold is over done.
31. Hi, Sue - OK, thanks for looking! - Jack
32. wow, there's supposed to be a hike over the Thanksgiving weekend that may include Pewitt's. I'v been there and it's a lovely place. Am not so much into the gold coloring on what's otherwise dark and often greenish, mossy walls. I'd like it better more realistically colored... but that's me. Love the blurred water and swirling leaves.
33. Just for comparison, take a look at this shot from September of 2007. Of course, this is no work of art - it was just taken to have a headshot avatar. But you get an idea of what Pewitt's looks like. (I have no other shots from there up online, so this can suffice for now).
34. doh! here's the link:
35. Hi, Lizs - I realize not everyone cares for this processing/interpretation, but I have to say this is the image as I saw it and like it. So, here it is for all to behold, and like or not according to their tastes! :^D Pewit's Nest really is a beautiful place - enjoy your hike! Thanks for looking & commenting! - Jack
36. Happy Thanksgiving to all!
37. I have to say this image fascinating, amazing , all the best Jack Johnson.

42. Thanks, baylaw - I appreciate it! - Jack
43. Wonderful shot; excellent lighting
44. Thanks, Bradley!
45. Fall colors are quite remarkable and intoxicating... the waterfall and swirls of the path of leaves as they move in the water below help add a nice contrast against the yellows. Nice.
46. Thanks, Cheri!
47. This is just beautiful. Love the gold and the water's silkiness.
48. Thanks, Joel - I'm glad you enjoy it! - Jack
49. Thanks to those who have looked & voted, and Happy New Year to all! - Jack
