  • Description: Called a living fossil, as it's one of the oldest plant species in the world. Found in the Huascaran National Park in Huaraz, Ancash Peru, it is protected as an endangered species. The largest member of the bromeliad family, the plants grow to be approximately 6 feet wide with flowers that can reach heights of 39 feet. Each plant flowers only once every one hundred years and they tend to flower in groups every 3 to 4 years with peaks in May and late October. Even when it's not in flower the Puya Raimondi is a sight to see with birds often nesting in the rosettes.
