The Buffalo National River, America's first national river, is located in northwest Arkansas. This photo was taken near Ponca, a small community in the river's headwaters area.
I'm learning that my best images of children are captured when I resist the temptation to orchestrate the moment. It seems I get a better result by waiting patiently for the right expression, gesture or activity (and, of course, light) to occur.
We'd just arrived at the river for some splash time, where little Cadence decided she would explore Grandma's picnic basket. Unaware that I was watching, she eased the cover off and discovered a container of fresh Arkansas strawberries inside. She pulled out a large, ripe berry and took a huge bite, then looked up to find me watching her through the lens. I love this moment of unposed surprise where she's paused mid-chew to ponder what Grandma is up, which causes that big mouthful of strawberry to send her face cutely askew.
