Snowden Graffiti

  • Title: Snowden Graffiti
  • State/Province/Region: North Dakota
  • Country: United States
  • Nearest Area: North Dakota - Montana Border on Missouri River
  • Nearest Town: Fairview, Montana
  • Brief Directions: West from Williston, North Dakota, through Trenton, North Dakota, south across the Missouri River, then west on a gravel road to the Snowden Bridge.
  • Best Season: Autumn
  • Description: Snowden Bridge is a historic "lift bridge" over the Missouri River near the North Dakota - Montana border. It was built to allow steamboat barge traffic to travel along the Missouri River, and met the requirement of 80 feet of clearance above the water by lowering two massive counterweights to lift the center section of the bridge. It was opened one time. The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Company still utilizes the track across the Snowden Bridge, and I found these parked graffiti laden rail cars parked on the bridge in some fabulous early morning light.
