  • Description: Upon arriving at the Kibale Forest Camp in Kibale National Forest, we had the opportunity to head out on a guided tour of the local swamp. The swamp was home Red Tailed monkeys, Black and white Colobus Monkeys, Chimpanzees, hundreds of bird species, Savannah Elephants and many other species of African wildlife. These primates, as interesting as they are for travelers and tourists to watch, wreck havoc on local farmland crops that lie adjacent to the swampy marshland. The only way to stop them from stealing the crops is to have people on guard pretty much 24/7. About every 400 yards or so we would come across someone keeping watch on the crops. Most of the people who were teenagers, mothers, or older farmers and carried 3 foot long machetes for protection. As we moved deeper into the swamp, we came across this young boy sitting guard, with only a little snack in hand, and no other people in sight.
