Laundry Day At The Ganges

  • Title: Laundry Day At The Ganges
  • State/Province/Region:
  • Country: India
  • Nearest Area: Uttar Pradesh State
  • Nearest Town: Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India
  • Brief Directions: Although Varanasi is a labyrinth of narrow alleys crammed with fascinating shops, daredevil motorcyclists and rickshaw drivers, stubborn livestock, as well as stray dogs, the stairways (ghats) that lead to the Ganges River on the western bank is where one finds the true pulse of the city.
  • Best Season: Spring
  • Description: From sunrise to sunset, the banks of the Ganges River in Varanasi are teeming with people engaged in a frenzy of sacred rituals or profane activities, and some daily routines beautifully blend the divine with the mundane. In this photograph, a woman lets her freshly laundered saris dry in the wind that gently blows over the ghats where others are bathing to wash away their sins.
