Come in winter for birds, spring and summer for everything else! This golden silk spider had built her web in the brush along the roadside of a driving trail on Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. Known for their enormous size, the golden silk spider is a species of orb weaver, and also builds tremendous webs. The approaching August storm in the background was causing the wind to gust with near-tropical storm strength, but this spider clung to her web, occasionally sliding up and down the strands. The background--the pond or "gator hole", the storm clouds, the cabbage palms and wind, just the whole surrounding environment--all epitomizes what an itsy bitsy spider really has to contend with to survive.
