Savage River Rams

  • Title: Savage River Rams
  • State/Province/Region: Alaska
  • Country: United States
  • Nearest Area: Denali National Park
  • Nearest Town: Healy
  • Best Season: Autumn
  • Description: By hiking up the Savage River Canyon in Denali National Park, then up the slopes above the river, one can reliably locate Dall rams on most days. These rams were part of a bachelor group of 8-9 animals. The horns of the ram on the left are full-curl and this individual was the dominant ram of the group. The behavior captured is a dominance display that is affected periodically this time of year (late summer, early autumn) to reinforce his position within the group. The ram on the right (note the tip is broken off of one horn) is studiously ignoring the dominant ram as did the others in this group. Fujichrome 100 was the film used.
  • Gear: Canon F-1 SLR, Canon 300 f-4, Leitz Tiltall Tripod,
