The Guardian

  • Title: The Guardian
  • State/Province/Region: Utah
  • Country: United States
  • Nearest Area: Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument
  • Nearest Town: Boulder
  • Brief Directions: About 11 miles from the town of Boulder, UT, on the north side of the Burr Trail.
  • Best Season: Autumn
  • Description: This canyon is probably the most reachable but at the same time most photogenic one in southern Utah. At the opening of the canyon are two giant maple trees. Observing the shifting of light inside any slot canyon is as interesting and exciting as it could get. I always love the soft glow on the wall that gets light reflected from walls receiving the direct light. In this case the wall on the right hand side received the warm light reflected from the left hand side. I waited two hours before the light just shifted out of the opening of the canyon so that the harshly lit side is out of the view. The maple tree at the same time still received enough light to distinguish itself from the huge wall in the background.
