The river begins in Weeki Wachee State Park, 56 miles north of Tampa, Florida. The park includes a canoe launch and a pick-up service at the take out near the Gulf Of Mexico.
The trip from park to Gulf can take all day if you do it right, or just a few hours if you are impervious to natural beauty and beckoning swimming holes. Best during the week as power boaters tend to push too far up the narrow river on summer weekends.
Signs of Fall can be scant in central Florida. But this leaf, floating down the 72 degree, spring-fed Weeki Wachee River sends its seasonal message clearly. The river varies from emerald to topaz with the blue sky and white clouds giving it moving hilights.
