The egg which the female is sitting on in this shot, hatched the following day.
A shore birds nesting area has been set aside in beautiful Belmar, NJ. This area is protected and monitored by volunteers. Each year Least Terns, Common Terns, and Palmated Plovers nest there. This year, pair of American Oyster Catchers had nested there. In this shot, the female remains sitting on one last egg, while 2 chicks which hatched earlier in the day, nestle underneath her wing. The male watches over.
