The Common Loon is an endangered and protected species in the state of New Hampshire and elsewhere. In 2008 I had the pleasure of following the progress of a pair of loons nesting on a small pond of marginal habitat. It was the first time in anyone's memory that loons had nested here. They successfully reared a chick and have returned each year since. In this image the 2-month old immature loon is staying hidden along shore while an interloping loon scouts the pond. I'm happy to report that after 30 minutes the interloper left without incident and the immature loon was reunited with its parent.
