Traditional Himba Elderly Woman

  • Title: Traditional Himba Elderly Woman
  • State/Province/Region:
  • Country: Namibia
  • Nearest Area: Namib Desert
  • Nearest Town: Sossusviei
  • Brief Directions: The Himba are found along the Kunene River in the north and on the northwest part of Namibia along the edges of the Namib desert.
  • Best Season: Winter
  • Description: The Himba people are called the last true nomadic tribe of Africa. Their way of life is harsh and rugged, but they are a stoic but happy people. They live on cow's milk, and their beef. As a people, they do not live very long. The woman in the image is about 50 years old. They weave baskets and such to sell in order to purchase more cattle, blankets, and little else. These people are an endangered group. They have lost thier herds to drought and have had to rebuild several time over. They worked with international activists, to block a proposed hydro-electric dam that would have flooded ancestral lands along the Kunene River. Their children can attend mobile schools where they learn English and there have been attempts to teach them to stay in one place and grow vegetables, however over all, that has not proven to be very successful yet. Conservancies give Himba control of wildlife and tourism on their lands.
