Contender Donna P. Bollenbach
American Landscape contest Contender Donna P. Bollenbach is continually inspired by the diverse raw wilderness of Kissimmee Prairie Preserve

Location: Kissimmee Prairie Preserve, FL
When did you take the photograph? January 9, 2005

Describe how you got this photo.
Scouting for a good sunrise location, I went to the slough the day before with my compass and determined that the sun would rise over the slough. I decided it had great potential for a morning shoot. Arriving at the location before sunrise I set up my tripod and positioned myself so the rising sun would be behind the palms. I started shooting as soon as the light allowed. The fog and mist were a bonus. I tried numerous exposures to capture the combination of cool and warm tones in the landscape and the fiery fog and mist created by the warm water temperature rising into cool winter air.
Did you use any special techniques?
I adjusted the white balance and temperature of the scene to restore the balance of cool and warm colors. I also tweaked exposure. I used overall and selective sharpening.
Why is this scene of the American Landscape special to you?
Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park protects one of the largest remaining stretches of Florida dry prairie and is home to many endangered plants and animals. While the primary habitat is dry grasslands and palmettos, there is also a crucial mix of depression marshes, sloughs and scattered shady hammocks. It is difficult to find a location in Florida that is more remote and rich in scenery and wildlife than Kissimmee Prairie Preserve. Whenever I visit the park I feel as if I am taken back to a time when the earliest settlers came to central Florida to live in the untamed wilderness. While this image captures only a small portion of the preserve, it is a personal reminder of the wildness of the landscape and it beckons me back at least a few times each year.
