Winter Sunset

Location: North Cascade Mountain Range, Washington

When did you take this photograph? July 19, 2011

Equipment:
Canon EOS 5D, Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L lens, B+W Circular Polarizer, 3-stop ND grad, Tripod

Describe how you got this photo.
A 20 second exposure brought out the changing color of the winter sky. I used a 3-stop Hard Reverse ND Grad to balance and maintain exposure, and a B+W Circular Polarizer 77mm to lower available stops and extend exposure to 20 seconds.

What story about The American Landscape do the photos tell?
I feel that my images of The American Landscape show a world of incredible natural significance and inspiration. I also have found it to be among the hardest and most challenging photography I've ever captured. Out in the field I did not want to hold expectations. I tried to achieve an openness to a scene coming together, and to communicate my experience with viewers in hopes that awareness of these rare places continues to increase with positive effect.
