Alba (Dawn)

Location: Boulder Beach, Acadia National Park, ME

When did you take this photograph? October 2012

Equipment:
Canon EOS 5d MkIII, Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens, Vanguard Tripod, Manfrotto head, remote cable, Lee Grad ND, Pro Optic CP-L

Describe how you got this photo.
With a headlamp on, I made my way down the dark and muddy slope that leads to a slippery boulder covered beach. I got to the edge of the water and found my position. The key for me was to get to the location and set-up with enough time to test a few shots before the sun came up the horizon. This location has a magical feel to it. With the iconic Otter Cove to the right and the amazing atmosphere all around, this made it one of my favorite all time spots for sunrise.

Did you use any special techniques?
I cannot say that I used a special technique for this shot, aside from using my typical landscape setting to maximize clarity. I almost always use various filters to slow down the light intake by applying darkening filters. I usually carry a Singh-Ray Vari-ND, which delivers every time.

Why is this scene of the American Landscape special to you?
Why is this scene of American Landscape special to you: This scene is special to me after discovering it the previous summer while visiting Acadia National Park with family. Acadia has a magical energy. Once you visit, you'll soon realize that it offers incredible natural environments from seascapes to mountain peaks, beautiful trails and incredible scenic ponds. In other words, it truly has it all. Because of its geographic location, it is one of the first regions to see sun light in the United States.
