I had spent the previous night shooting star trails on the shores of the Salton Sea, but decided to get out early and experience this beautiful area. I waited for one of the only two locations that offer coffee, and headed for the heart of the desert. I found myself at this particular location as the sun began to rise. I noticed the rock in front of me light up as if it was on fire. I shot this contrast between the soft green cactus and the hard red rock.

The desert embodies the true spirit of the Western Region of our Country, although they all offer different details such as sand color, content, rock formations and vegetation.

I decided to take a guided tour for the internal area of the park since I really had no idea where to go and my time was limited. I chose a local company and Joe, the owner/guide was meticulous in showing me the Badlands which cover a large area of this State Park. We ended up at the Peak, known as "Fonts Point", to experience an epic sunset. We had all of the elements in place; however, the 'Epic' never arrived. But the sun did provide a very special light that rendered this beautiful and magical landscape.

What an amazing park this is! Anza-Borrego Forest State Park truly offers the scope of beautiful scenery and lookout points and exemplifies the vastness of our country. It's a short drive from San Diego and worth the trip. You can also experience the majestic views along the Salton Sea, which is literally 30 minutes away from this lookout.

I had just finished shooting the "Fonts Point" lookout and had packed away all of my gear. As I was heading back to my Jeep, I spotted this unique plant. It was a mixture of both the texture, the amazing blue tones and the cloud pattern that made me unpack all of my gear for just a few more shots before calling it a day. I'm very pleased I made that determination.

This image screamed to me as the true simplicity of the American desert setting. In my eyes, it captures the desert areas of our rich country by displaying texture, color and vastness.
