2014 American Landscape Contest Contender Jeremy Thies enjoys the Wyoming landscape outside of Yellowstone

This Article Features Photo Zoom

Photographer: Jeremy Thies,

Location: Chief Joseph Scenic Highway, Wyoming

When did you take this photograph? October 12, 2013

Equipment: Canon EOS 6D, Canon 24-105mm f/4L, Cokin Graduated 0.9 ND filter, Manfrotto 290 tripod, Manfrotto 494RC2 ballhead

The story behind the shot:
I've been to northwest Wyoming many times and knew there were a lot of beautiful photography opportunities; I had just never been there with a camera in hand. A friend had told me that Chief Joseph Scenic Highway was a must see with great landscapes, so that is where I ended up. The whole weekend was extremely overcast with the occasional snow flurries higher up in the mountains. Nothing seemed appealing photographically until I came down the backside of the mountains and saw this large pond with perfectly still water and a great reflection. I knew I had to stop and capture the moment.

Did you use any special techniques in-camera or in post-processing?
This image consists of three bracketed exposures with an ISO100. I then manually blended the exposures in photoshop to properly expose the entire image.

Why is this scene of the American Landscape special to you?
Northwest Wyoming is famous for Yellowstone National Park, but there are also many amazing locations that people skip over just to see the National Parks. Living in Wyoming gives me the opportunity to hop in the car and travel short distances to these untouched landscapes. Being out in such dramatic landscapes, just me and my dog, is some of the most relaxing times a person can experience.
