The story behind the shot:
I had long dreamed of going to Patagonia, and in April of this year that dream finally came true. This wild and hauntingly beautiful place did not disappoint. I decided to go with a well-established photo tour company – Joseph Van Ohs. The guides spent evenings hunched over maps, discussing our 'plan of attack' for the next day. This photo was taken at exactly 5:56 pm, in the heart of Torres Del Paine National Park. I just waited for that magic light to hit the side of the mountain just so. Click. I was using a Canon 5D Mark III on a sturdy tripod (the winds there can be fierce) and settings of ISO 400, F16, 250th of a second. I witnessed a dream come true, and better yet, I preserved the moment forever.
There was some post processing involved. I darkened the sky using the quick selection tool and a curves adjustment layer. I lightened the foreground a touch using the shadows/highlights filter. I did some slight burning of the side of the mountain. Lastly I used the smart sharpen filter for some overall sharpening.
