Contender Jaden Nyberg
2014 Vista Contest Contender Jaden Nyberg captured a quiet moment at the popular tourist destination of Wailua Falls
Photographer: Jaden Nyberg
Location: Wailua Falls, Kauai, Hawaii.
Date: March 2, 2014.
Equipment: Nikon D7000, Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X PRO DX lens, B+W 10-stop ND filter, Slik Tripod.
The story behind the shot:
Wailua Falls is a popular tourist destination on Kauai, Hawaii and is often very crowded throughout the day. I made the trip to the falls in the evening, as it is generally quiet with nice light. The road pulls right up to the falls and a small area that gives you a view of the falls and the canyon below. I wedged my tripod onto the railing in order to get a better perspective looking straight down the canyon. The overcast evening provided a beautiful even light on the falls and the canyon below and a light wind helped to reduce the amount of mist coming from the falls.
I opened up the shutter for 30 seconds to get the magical flowing waterfall feel that I was looking for and to decrease the amount of mist coming out of the canyon. The ND filter not only helped with the long exposure, but also added some great contrast to the beautiful colors coming out of the canyon and the surrounding vegetation. I increased the vibrancy and color contrast in post.
