Contender Tom Elenbaas
2014 Vista Contest Contender Tom Elenbaas captured this image on his first trip back to Banff National Park after 50 years
Photographer: Tom Elenbaas
Location: Mistaya Canyon, Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada.
Date: June, 2013.
Equipment: Canon EOS 6D, Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM lens, 3-stop ND filter.
The story behind the shot:
My wife and I visited the Canadian Rockies in June, 2013. It was my first trip there in more than 50 years. I had a new Canon 6D and the scenery was so spectacular everywhere we went that I was like a kid in a candy store. Mistaya Canyon is in Banff National Park, easily accessible from the Icefields Parkway north of Peyto Lake. I shot this at 17mm to emphasize the limestone cliffs and narrow gorge cut by the Mistaya River juxtaposed against the expanse of the surrounding vista.
The RAW file was processed in Lightroom. Overall contrast and definition was enhanced with Topaz Clarity. Nik's Viveza was used to selectively bring out the structure of the rocks and distant mountains and to ameliorate the effects of the dark shadows created by the harsh mid-day sun.
