It took quite some time before people found out where the monarch butterflies were migrating to during the fall season. The monarchs were leaving southern Canada and heading south annually to Angangueo, a tiny town in the Mexican state of Michoacán. These butterflies travel some 2,000 or more miles to this sprawling, sunlit valley just outside of Angangueo. Known as the El Rosario Butterfly Sanctuary, here you'll find millions of monarchs at home, and from morning until just after noon, the butterflies scatter from their resting places and fill the sky. It's an awe-inspiring spectacle as the butterflies swarm over the horizon, but after this time of day, they begin to latch back onto trees, leaves or whatever burrow they can find, which is another treat for macro shots.

Iconic shots
Most of the places we travel to feature well-known iconic features. Think of Halfdome in Yosemite or the London’s Big Ben. These icons inspire us to go out and take pictures, and you should certainly get your own trophy shot. But after you’ve bagged the key icon, take some extra time to explore more and look for a vantage point that you haven’t seen before.

Back it up!
Don’t risk losing your once-in-a-lifetime shots. Back up your images every day to your laptop or to a portable media device. Use your laptop to burn CDs or DVDs of your shots and pack those discs with your clothes or in another bag separate from your camera gear and laptop. More copies means more safeguards to ensure you return home with your best shots. Online storage services to which you can upload full-resolution images are another excellent alternative.
