The Great Smoky Mountains National Park runs the gamut from Tennessee into rural parts of North Carolina, offering numerous photographic opportunities. Probably the most photographed spot is Cades Cove, a lush and fertile valley surrounded by the rolling hills of the Great Smokies. An 11-mile one-way road that runs throughout the cove connects you to old log cabins, churches, wildflowers and an abundance of wildlife, such as deer, bears and horses–depending on the season. Ample photo ops are everywhere, from the old, dirt loop road around the park, to scenic vistas shot from the middle of the cove.

Continuous shooting
Try shooting brief bursts instead of single frames when dealing with action subjects. Shooting bursts will increase your chances of capturing that perfect moment in that deer’s leap or that bird’s wing position. The Canon EOS 5D excels at action photography and can shoot at 3 fps for up to 17 RAW or 60 Large Fine JPEGs. For more on the EOS 5D, click here.

Be a photojournalist
Go beyond photography and carry a journal or audio recorders to make observations along the way. Take notes about ideas for shots at a different time of day, scout locations, and note details about the shots you take and the people you meet. All of this is terrific reference when you get home, and can help you organize your shots, or prepare a dialogue to accompany a slide show or custom photo book.
