Playing With Fire

  • Title: Playing With Fire
  • State/Province/Region:
  • Country: Costa Rica
  • Nearest Area: Carara
  • Nearest Town: Pigres
  • Brief Directions: From San José any tourist agency will direct you to the Tárcoles River, approximately 2 in a half hours from the capital city.
  • Notes: Most tourists do not take the boat for the adventure and, instead, stand above the river on a bridge on the highway to photograph large crocodiles and to feed them.
  • Best Season: Summer
  • Description: This picture was shot at the Tárcoles River in Costa Rica a few years ago. Don José, as he is popularly known, steps out of a boat with lots of scared tourists and waits for the crocodile to get out of the water and eat a chicken. It's a scary moment because the tourists in the boat are very close to the action. It was hard for me to hold the camera steady so I could take a good shot. Not only is there movement on the boat, but I was "literally" shaking as I took the picture. I did not want to become the crocodile's next meal!

Thanks Paul and Lorenzo! This is one of those scenes that a camera will never do justice to-there was nothing like being there.
